Department of Visual Communication Design- Sets up globally competitive programs such as ‘Apple Certified International Education Center’
Department of Industrial Design–Leads living culture for humans through designing device which helps treatment for autistic children

In 1975, a famed architect of Korea, Kim, Su Guen (1931~1986), accepted the offer to become a professor at Kookmin University. Professor Kim set up the College of Design, integrating architecture, fashion, decoration art, and art design, and played a role as the first Dean of theCollege.

Kookmin Universitysaid “In the past, there was only a college of art in universities. At that time, we set up the first ‘College of Design’ to reflect design education and philosophy, which is being an individual and being adventurous.”

Now after 37years have passed from that time, the ability of students from the College of Design atKookmin University is the best in Korea.The goal of the College of Design is ‘Design for humans, design for nature, and design for the future.’

Apple Certified International Education Center

In the College of Design, the Dept. of Visual Communication Design, which was set up in 2010, produced the first graduating students. Even though the history is short, there are many programs equipped through international competition, which generate the first endeavorshere in Korea.

A representation of this is the setting up of the ‘Apple Authorized Training Center (AATC)’last year. AATC is an educational institution of appointing agencies where students can take a test in order to receive an international education on all of Apple’s programs directly from the company in America.The fact that the Dept. of Visual Communication Design atKookmin University set up this center means it passed a strict competition in providing quality facilities and the standard of human resources of Apple Inc.

With the setting up the center, an international certification test was included as a major subject. Students from the Dept. Visual Communication Design can get an office education in the programs of Apple such as Final Cut Pro, Motion, Color, Logic, etc. and take an office exam as well. All of the second years students passed the Final Cut Pro X level one test this year.

Visual Communication Design atKookmin Universitywas appointed as Adobe Certified Associate (ACA).
ACA is an international certification received by 600members in Asia.

Design which Changes Living Culture

The Departmentof Industrial Design fosters the best designer teaching theory and technology connected to product, interior, environment and vehicle designs. The works of graduate students from this department are ones which can change our lives and cultures. For example, Ju Hea Lee has designed a ‘System of psychological safety for the autistic child’. This system is an instrument for autistic children who would like to smell by using a scent treatment, in which they carrya scent which appeals to them.In addition there are many works from graduate students, such as an extreme sports game where everyone can enjoy the robot ’Rollro,’ culture leisure park at the Han river,among others.

Worldwide Recognition

The Dept. of Interior Design, established in 1998, consists of education and research about technology, function, and beauty as creative values to form new space culture. The graduate students are working at architectural design offices, interior design offices, company agencies, state enterprises, freelancers, etc. Students from the department achieve recognition for their abilities though international and domestic exhibitions and academic contests. They won the grand prize in the Red Dot Award of Germany in 2010.In addition, there are other departments of design,in the college, such as industrial, visual communication, metalwork &jewelry, ceramics, and fashion design.
