The Department of Advanced FermentationFusion Science and Technology
When we think of fermentation, usually only foods like alcohol and soy beanscome to mind. However, the Department of Advanced FermentationFusion Science and Technology opened at Kookmin Univ. in 2010, develops technology and various principles connecting bio food and medical materials. This is fusion knowledgecombininglife, fermentation, cold storage, design, history and medicine.

The curriculum of the Department of Advanced FermentationFusion Science and Technology is various, including biology, microbiology, biochemistry, biomaterials, microbial culture, bio-energy engineering, storage engineering, and design for bio-products. Kookmin University said this is a creative technology to be demonstrated worldwide.

Third year students such as Seo YenKim, Young RimSeun and Da BeanChoi have researched the foundation for developing medical materials like an anticancer drug in the bio medical materials lab. They are only collegestudents but they have a special experienceresearchingat the level of graduate school. Ji SuKang, third yearstudent, has practiced in a low temperature bio technology lab during this year. In addition toresearching she is interested in machines, so she is talking lectures from the Department ofMechanics.

A lab rotation system is a specializededucation system for the Department of Advanced FermentationFusion Science and Technology atKookmin University. This is so students can participatein research each semester in more than two places. This is an advantage that they can have more chances to get real experience than any other students in their field.

Professors from the Department of Advanced FermentationFusion Science and Technology set up a cooperative system with UC Davis in California, U.S.A., which is famous in this area. Kookmin University made an agreement onresearch and education withthe Robert MondabiWine&Food Science Lab from this college. In addition,Kookmin is doing collaborative research with Osaka College in Japan, the Korea ResearchInstitute of Bioscience and Biotechnology, the Korea Food Research Institute, LG Electronics Companyand Samsung Electronics Company. Graduate students from this department will havevery diverse futures. Mostly they will work for businesses such as food companies, national research institutions, medicine companies, etc. This department is planning to operate a program for getting jobs, starting from this year in preparation for 2014, when the department will have the first graduation students.Students from the third year on will be able to receive practice with the program, doing things like going to companies such as CJ, Nam Yang, Pulmuone, Amore Pacific, etc. This year, students who got a master degree have received jobs as researchers in Greencross, and TS Corporation. Kookmin University said that Samyang Corporationhas promised to givescholarships to two students for two years.
