The Department of Automotive Engineering is the representing brand for Kookmin University. The Department ofAutomotive Engineering has been researching automobiles throughenvironmental friendly engineering; humans using a fusion of humans, technology and the environmentto make an automobile that will take humans and go.The result of the research has reachedthe point of making artificial intelligence cars which can judge and move by themselves.

In the Department ofAutomotive Engineering, they have made an unmannedautomobile lab for researching systems like a car that can move without a person holding the steering wheel.It can change lanes or give awarning for dozing off drivers. This lab consists of 17students in the master’s and doctoral courses.

In this lab, they finally developed ‘CREON’ which is anunmannedautonomous driving car in 2011. They put censorsoutside the car that can hear and see like a person in order to perceive the location of obstacles and the driving environment. They also put a device which plays the role of human arms and legs inside the car, which can steerand use the accelerator and brake pedals so the car can move without a driver. Through this technology, they have developed over 10 cars up to this point.

They have been researching a proper driving system because of the way in which unmannedautomobiles are on the increase. The car has to perceive safety regions such as school zones and silver zones, and obey regulated speed limitsin order toguaranteesafety and right of way. Also, we have to consider that this car can’t handle control as well when compared to excellent drivers. To cover this problem,the lab has developed technology such as security control in the car and an intelligent security driving system.

The cars fusea friendly environment and energy,and they are actively researching about commercializing them as well.Their goal is to develop highly friendly environmental cars such as electronic and hybridonesthat can maintain driving time and havedurable functions.That’s why they are focusing on developing large charge battery technology which can sustain driving for a long time.

We must focus on the remarkable achievements of the Department ofAutomotive Engineering as well as the labs.
There are 140 research groups participatingin national automobile contests within Kookmin University. These student groups have good results like receivingawards. Automotive graduatestudents offer help as mentors. The cost of automobile research is supported by the government, in connection with large companies.
