Security technologies protect our daily lives in smart devices, financial systems, and electronic passports. Professor Han Dong-guk of Kookmin University's Department of Information Security develops physics-based security solutions to counter next-generation security threats, based on Side-Channel Analysis (SCA) technology.
What is Side-Channel Analysis?
Side-Channel Analysis is a hacking technique that can leak encrypted information by analyzing physical information—such as power consumption, electromagnetic waves, sound, and heat—generated when a crypto system operates.
Professor Han Dong-guk leverages this technology in reverse to diagnose and remediate security vulnerabilities in smart devices, financial systems, electronic passports, and more.
Research Fields and Application Cases
Professor Han applies side-channel analysis techniques to various fields, including: ● Enhancing the security of financial IC cards and e-passports
● Combining Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) with side-channel analysis
● Developing AI-based intelligent security technologies
● Proposing practical security solutions for industrial sites, including smart devices and weapon systems
This research provides defense technologies against realistic hacking threats, making significant contributions to national security, industrial security, and personal information protection.
Industry-Academia Collaboration and Technological Achievements
Professor Han collaborates with numerous companies as well as government and defense research institutes, leading efforts to solve practical security problems in industrial settings. ● Development of intelligent security technologies combined with AI
● Research on technologies to enhance the security of weapon systems and defense equipment
● Conducting commercialization-focused research for industrial application
“Security is not a theoretical issue but a real-world problem.
Creating technologies that can be immediately utilized in industrial settings is the core of my research.”
Educational Philosophy and Future Vision
Professor Han emphasizes a deep understanding of mathematics, cryptography, and overall security systems for his students, aiming to cultivate practical security experts with problem-solving skills and creativity.
● Converged education of AI and security
● Project-based classes based on real hacking scenarios
● Participation in and mentoring for domestic and international security competitions and awards
“My educational direction is to prepare for a future society led by AI-based security technologies by nurturing creative and practical talent.”
