Kookmin University? “Able” for Everyone!
Center for Students with Disabilities Opens
- 11.12.08 / 이영선
In September 2011, KMU opened its own Center for Students with Disabilities in order to help them feel comfortable in an educational atmosphere and live a stable school-life at KMU.
The Center for Students with Disabilities can be found in Room 311 at the Student Center.
According to the regulations, this center has a manager, three staff members, and two assistant instructors. Before the center opened, the Student Affairs Team managed all programs for physically challenged students.
Students with any physical disability can receive assistance by calling (02) 910-5001 or writing the school.
Physically challenged students can be helped by a guide when they register for courses and attend classes. Aid is available upon request for students who need help. Individual help is also available at the center.
Physically challenged Kookminians have not been previously given their due place, because KMU hasn’t had any special screening process for the disabled when granting admission to the school. Including graduate students, there are twelve physically challenged students at KMU, all with various disabilities.
Only two months have passed since its establishment, and there has not been enough advertisement about the center, so as of yet there are no special programs being offered.
However, the KMU Center for Students with Disabilities will participate in a nationwide conference for all Center for Students with Disabilities, and thereby have the opportunity to exchange ideas with other universities who are doing the same.
Currently there are no scholarships for the physically challenged students. However, they can apply for scholarships and student loans according to the same conditions and standards as other students.
Lee Su-Mi, a staff member at Center for Students with Disabilities said, “As we take responsibility for this new organization, the rights of our physically challenged students to study and be supported will surely develop.”
