Sculpture art from Kookmin University, Yang Pyeong Eco Art Festival & International Exchange Exhibition in China
- 11.11.09 / 최규찬
It’s been particularly rainy this summer. Students majoring in Sculpture at Kookmin Univ. have been preparing their works very hard. They prepared two projects through hard work during the vacation. One is the Yang Pyeong Eco Art Festival that consists of students and professors. The project in which seven colleges have participated, offered a rest area to residents along with making a harmonious place to sculpt. Nature and humanity are in harmony with Yang Pyeong’s spectacular scenery as the setting up of eco-sculptures began in Yang Pyeong. Another exhibition took place in China. The exhibition in China is an international exchange project in conjunction with No Shin Art Institution, which is one of the top 3 schools in art.
“The two projects consisted of their passion, let’s take look at this.”
#1. Add the natural environment with history in the making.
-Yang Pyeong Eco Art Festival
The Yang Pyeong Eco Art Festival event is the 4th this year designed to keep the health and beauty of the natural environment surrounding humanity and earth based on new awareness of our environment and culture. Among the events, our school students participated in the ‘Hu’ project, which is a public project.
This is an eco-sculptures making program which has the concept of a public project with the participation of 7 colleges’ professors, students and residents. The eco-sculpture was produced as the subject ‘Hu’ and offered the role of a rest area and sculpture at the same time. Among the participating schools were: Sungshin Women’s Univ., Hongik Univ., Korea National University of Arts, and Suwon Univ.
This project consisted of Prof. Tae Gon Kim and grades 1-4 students from last July to September. A work they created sits up under the Yang Geun Bridge and the name of work is ‘PEACE’. Around this place was a ferocious battlefield where a million south and north soldiers were killed. A basin under the Yang Geun Bridge, which will be set up around the work, will be a rest and peace area where Yang Pyeong residents can do exercise and ride bicycles.
11 circle shaped sculptures made from concrete symbolize bombs and bullets.
In this work, the arranging of the 11 sculptures is very important because it must be ‘PEACE’ with the right arrangement. The work is a sculpture expression and the sign expresses abstraction through installing art and original art. If you look here, you can see exactly ‘Peace’.
We expect that Yang Pyeong residents who will be the audience can participate in the space by taking a photo, seeing the work and pleasantly sitting here.
#2 Have an exhibition in China
-China International Exchange Exhibition
No Shin Art Institution, which is one of the top 3 prestigious schools in China, participated with Kookmin University in an international exchange exhibition. The exhibition is the first exchange exhibition between the two schools. There will be an exhibition once a year by turn. Promoting increased mutual understanding and goodwill of the next generation is the most important thing for East Asia’s Art.
No Shin Art Institution, which is one of three prestigious schools, is improving with a perfect curriculum in history and culture. Also, graduate students draw many works. Specifically the Oil Painting, Sculpture, and Visual Design departments are very famous. Those departments are especially fostered by the school.
The exhibition consists of works by Kookmin University’s 19 members (3 Profs., 1 Ph.D, 14 Master Degree, 1 assistant) and by students from No Shin Art Institution’s from Sep. 10th, to 15th, 2011. No Shin and Kookmin students looked around the works and got to know each other as well as offer exchange. Although the moment was so short, the two school’s students felt close and assurance about the exchange as well.
Upon finishing the exhibition, for 5 days the KMU students visited China’s prestigious art museums such as the 789 Beijing Center Art Institution, the China Art Museum and the art school. It was a great chance to widen our mental vision through this exchange exhibition. I’m looking forward to see another exchange exhibition at Kookmin University next year, after seeing the China exhibition of students majoring in Sculpture Art.
