The graduation fashion show by Kookmin University’s Fashion Design students was held at the North Square of the College of Design on September 23rd. Despite the chilly weather, guests and media filled all six hundred VIP and standing seats in the open air. Every year, Fashion Design students present costumes with their various and original designs. This year, 42 seniors successfully carried out their graduation show with great professionalism.
100% THEMSELVES
Fashion Design students prepared for the show for a year. Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors participated in the whole process as helpers and show staff. Every step of the show from planning, decorating stages, making brochures to directing is all done by “100% themselves.”
People lining up to enter the show at least one hour before, showed up for various reasons. Sang Un Lee (Interior Design, 08), said it was her 3rd time to see the fashion show. “As a student of the same school, I can feel their efforts. Every time I can see something new and I really enjoy it.” There were also high school students passionately dreaming to be fashion designers.

The main theme of this fashion show was 'nextstyle.ac.kr', meaning that the show would reveal the leading styles of the next year. "Rather than following trends or showing one big unified theme, we tried to show each student's characteristics and also their own definition of beauty," student representative Chung Hwan Lee (Fashion Design, 05) said.
The graduate fashion show had 7 different stages. On stage 1, clothes with human bones revealed the beauty of the human body. The audience was amazed by stage 4 students’ creative pieces, such as machine-like shoulder accessories, and costumes with innovative and unique silhouettes made by plastic that looked like threads of a broom.
The final 7th stage had a strong impact with flowing curves in blue and red. Although each student exhibited their own unique characteristics, all stages were in harmony because of the skillful organization of the entire show. The dreamy decoration of the runway with white plastic straws that looked like the reeds also pleasantly astounded the guests.
The students, who were checking their clothes with anxiety before the show, shared joy with friends and some were bursting into tears after the show. "I am not fully satisfied but I really enjoyed preparing for the show and it was a very meaningful experience for me," Gyul Kim (Fashion Design, 08) said. Professor Jae Jung Lee, (Fashion Design) who witnessed every process of the show from the beginning to the finale, said: "Since Kookmin University students are aesthetically sensitive and also passionate, they will be good designers in the fashion industry if they keep preparing for the future with professionalism."
The graduate fashion show successfully demonstrated the crucial existence of Kookmin University in the fashion industry. The students’ passion and efforts for four years at the university finally gave rise to the form of a beautiful extravaganza. No doubt Korea’s fashion industry will be waiting for Kookmin University’s 40th fashion show offering creativity and unique styles this next year.
