Do You Want to Be a Profiler?

Do you know Sherlock Holmes? He is the detective who appears in the novels written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. He is famous for solving difficult situations with his outstanding observation and logical reasoning. Holmes may be a fictional character, but logicians of such acumen do exist in real life. They are commonly called "profilers" whose job is to study criminals' behavior. Profilers often appear in dramas or movies as interesting and intriguing individuals. In the recent hit series IRIS, a group of government profilers heroically helped prevent a war on the Korean peninsula. In another series HON, the main character used his analytical power to solve a heinous murder of a schoolgirl. Those characters have a lot in common with profilers, because they observe closely everthing and chase a criminal.
Profilers analyze crime scenes in narrowing down suspects. In addition to evidence collected at the scene, they search for other clues sometimes even through forensic hypnosis. All of evidences, even a tiny piece of object or bloodstain, are very important. Identifying a possible suspect requires great skill and technique. It can take a long time to research. In Korea, profilers are playing an important role. There exist a small number of profilers, but they help solve many high-profile cases. When police reached the limit in getting a confession, profilers got confession from criminals by targeting criminals’ weakness. Nowadays, there are many students who want to become profilers. Becoming a profiler requires the knowledge of psychology and sociology whatever necessary to understand human behavior.
In Korea, all police officers have a chance to become profiler by joining a crime analysis team. Inspector Kown Il Yong is one of the most well-known and respected figures. By using an array of forensic methods, he helped catch the infamous serial killer Kang Ho Soon and later Kim Kil Tae (who brutally raped and murdered a 13 Year old girl). He said, "I have dealt with very cruel murders, a great number of them. Some are unforgettable. I was so saddened by the murder of Ye Jin and Hye Seul. We shall never let innocent children become victims."
When profilers catch criminals and attract attention of the media, their job may strike the public as simply glamorous. However, they have to work under tremendous stress. They are always on the road, catching the bad guys. The world is a safer place thanks to their hard work. And that is why the job of profiler should draw our interest and respect.
