Kookmin University (KMU) presented its new vision as “a university that sets the
standard for higher education” as part of its 80th anniversary commemorative project.
The accompanying slogan, “Make the Rules, Break the Rules,” reflects KMU’s unique
pioneering and innovating spirit. Along with the new vision, KMU also launched its 80th
Anniversary Commemorative Project.
On Jul. 9, KMU held the “Quantum Campus Declaration Ceremony.” This event was
designed to announce KMU’s vision of becoming the first university in Korea to
establish a “quantum campus” and position itself as a future hub for quantum technology.
Quantum technology is a next-generation core technology poised to drive
innovation across various fields such as drug development, biotechnology, artificial
intelligence, and information security.

A KMU official said, “We have a mid-to-long term plan to complete a platform equipped
with both security technology and quantum computing demonstration infrastructure
through the establishment of a quantum campus, and to expand the platform both
domestically and internationally.”
KMU designed a new graduation gown and unveiled it on the morning of Oct. 17 at the
79th anniversary ceremony and future vision declaration held in KMU’s main building. The
gown was developed under the concept of “a modern continuation of traditional Korean
attire” by combining the scholar’s official hat worn by kings of the Joseon Dynasty with
KMU’s symbolic color, “KMU BLUE.” The university’s new gown aims to embody both
the traditional beauty of Korean clothing and KMU’s modern identity.
KMU launched the “Proud Alumni Search” campaign to recognize alumni who have
had significant impacts in various areas of society. The campaign aims to expand the
alumni network and build a comprehensive alumni database to systematically document
the university’s history and achievements.
Through the campaign, KMU seeks to identify alumni working in a wide range
of fields, including politics, government, law, education, business, the military,
media, arts and culture, civic organizations, academia, and professional fields. To
participate, students can register through the “Joins” profile page (people.joins.com)
and submit supporting documents to verify the candidate’s identity and achievements
via email (kmuert@kookmin.ac.kr). A small commemorative gift will be offered to those
who identify eligible alumni.
The College of Future Convergence held the “2026 Major Exploration Fair” for its
students over two days beginning May 14 in the university gymnasium. The fair was
organized to help freshmen and current students explore information about various
majors and find academic paths aligned with their career goals. The event was especially
meaningful in that KMU, marking its 80th anniversary, is continuing its efforts
to concretize student-centered educational innovation and expand the foundation
for developing the interdisciplinary talent needed in the future. The school held its first
major exploration fair last year, with about 900 students participating. Over the course
of the two days this year, more than 1,000 students visited, representing a 9% increase
in participation compared with the previous year. President Jeong Seung-ryeol said, “We
will continue to support students in choosing their majors and pursuing interdisciplinary
growth so that they can discover their potential and design their own future.”
KMU has developed two original typefaces, ‘Seonggokche’ and ‘Haeongche’. The typefaces
were developed over approximately one year, with a focus on conveying KMU’s “beginning
and future.” ‘Seonggokche’ symbolizes the university’s founding spirit and the
legacy of Kim Seong-gon, who revitalized the
university, while ‘Haeongche’ reflects the pioneering and
innovation spirit embodied by Kim Seok-won, the eldest son of Kim Seong-gon and
chairman of Ssangyong Group. The university plans to use the two typefaces for a variety of
online and offline promotional materials for its 80th anniversary. In particular, the typefaces
were distributed free of charge under the “CCBY-ND (Attribution-NoDerivatives)” license,
allowing not only university members but also the public to make extensive use of these
original typefaces of KMU.
The 80th Anniversary Commemorative Project will continue until February, 2027.
While significant progress has been made on many of the projects, those such as
the Suborbital Satellite Launch, KBS Open Concert, Construction of the Front Building
of Bugak Hall, and Kookmin Cantata are still to come. Stay tuned for more upcoming
