Dr. Choi Ji Hoon (alumnus), a researcher of Professor Hee-So Noh in the Department of Nanoelectronics and Physics at KU, published a paper titled "Coherent perfect loss with single and broadband resonators at photonic crystal nanobeam" in the March 2024 issue of Nanophotonics in collaboration with Professor Young-Ki Hong of Gyeongsang National University, and was selected as the cover paper.
Optical resonance can be used to amplify light to create lasers, but it can also be used to amplify absorption. It is possible to go further and have the material act as an absorber by removing light from the optical cavity through scattering instead of absorbing it. In this study, we realized the complete absorption of light through scattering and fabricated multiple optical cavities using photonic crystals on a silicon chip to realize a complete absorption structure with a wider wavelength band and demonstrated it experimentally.
This result is expected to be utilized in light sensors and modulator switches using light.
