The Department of Industrial Design at the College of Art and Design held its second “ID_WEEK” workshop over five days, from Monday, September 14, to Friday, September 18. Now in its second year, the event brought together approximately 140 students from the 1st through 3rd grades and about 40 4th-year students, providing an opportunity for in-depth communication and collaboration between upperclassmen and underclassmen.
 
The workshop featured a diverse lineup of programs designed to simultaneously enhance students’ practical design skills and teamwork, including ▲ the “1-Week Design Project,” ▲ seminars between upperclassmen and underclassmen, and ▲ exchange events between upperclassmen and underclassmen.
 
In the “1-Week Design Project,” first- through third-year students formed teams to undertake a redesign project for “door components” tailored to the spatial characteristics of the third floor of the College of Art and Design building. The opening ceremony provided an opportunity for team members to interact, and a demonstration of robotics design outcomes—developed through collaboration between students from the Department of Industrial Design and the RCLAB in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the College of Engineering during the previous semester’s [Alpha Project]—was also held, drawing significant interest.
 
Over the course of the week-long project, a total of 28 submissions were produced, and six outstanding works were selected through a judging process. The subsequent “Senior-Junior Seminar” featured seniors with internship experience sharing their practical insights and participating in a Q&A session. This provided first- and second-year students with practical guidance for concretely planning their future college life and career paths.

Additionally, at the “Rubber Band Car Grand Prix”—an event organized to foster interaction between upperclassmen and underclassmen—students used materials such as wooden sticks, rubber bands, and kraft paper to build their own rubber band cars and compete in races. Through the process of brainstorming and building together, the participating students strengthened their collaborative design skills.

The Department of Industrial Design noted that this year’s ID_WEEK served as a meaningful opportunity to break down barriers between grade levels and foster mutual growth among seniors and juniors.
