To mark its 80th anniversary, Kookmin University (President Jeong Seung Ryul) is hosting “The Drawing,” a 10-year-long interdisciplinary exhibition that blurs the boundaries between art and engineering, through Friday, September 11. Organized by the Future Automotive Innovation Convergence College Project Team (Director Shin Sung-Hwan), this exhibition features students from Kookmin University’s Department of Automotive Engineering and Kyung Hee University’s College of Fine Arts, along with invited artists, who connect their diverse majors and perspectives through drawing.

*The Drawing* began in 2017 as part of a convergence education program that integrates drawing into engineering education. Through the process of directly observing and drawing automobiles and mechanical systems, it has expanded students’ engineering observational skills and spatial perception abilities; over the years, it has evolved into an exhibition that brings together engineering and art, as well as students and artists.

This year’s exhibition will take place sequentially at two venues. First, it will be on view at the BODA Gallery at the Incheon Science and Arts School for the Gifted through Thursday, August 27, in conjunction with the school’s 10th-anniversary celebrations. The exhibition will then move to the Kyung Hee University Art Museum, where it will continue through Friday, September 11, creating a space for exchange where universities and schools, as well as engineering and the arts, can share their perspectives.

Professor Lee Dongheon of the Automotive Mobility Department at Kookmin University, who has been guiding the students’ classes in preparation for the exhibition, stated, “‘The Drawing’ finds its meaning not in the goal of drawing well, but in the process of carefully observing the subject and visually expressing the structures and relationships one has understood.” He added, “It is particularly meaningful that this exhibition, which has continued for 10 years, has expanded this year into a forum for exchange involving students from various educational institutions and disciplines, as well as artists.”

Meanwhile, Kookmin University, celebrating its 80th anniversary, is preparing for a new leap toward the next 100 years under the vision of “A University Setting the Standard for Higher Education” and the slogan “Make the Rule, Break the Rule.” To this end, the university has established “KMU VISION 2035: EDGE,” a mid- to long-term development strategy, and selected eight specialized fields to intensively strengthen the university’s competitiveness. Among these, the “Design & Content” and “Mobility” fields—based on design and automotive engineering with a practical focus, which are Kookmin University’s core competitive strengths—are showcasing a variety of achievements that will lead the way in the AI era.
