Kookmin University (President Jeong Seung-ryul) has achieved the highest grade, S, for three consecutive years in the performance evaluation of the University Innovation Support Program, which is organized by the Ministry of Education and the National Research Foundation of Korea. This achievement is the result of systematic efforts to establish customized support systems and infrastructure centered on educational needs through differentiated educational program innovations, including the major selection system.

Over the past six years of the first and second cycles, Kookmin University has improved its overall education system in line with the basic direction of the University Innovation Support Program and systematically promoted the flexibility of its academic system to strengthen students' freedom of major selection. In particular, this achievement is even more significant as it is rare for a large university in the Seoul metropolitan area with over 3,000 enrolled students to receive an S grade for three consecutive years.

Starting with the 2025 academic year, Kookmin University will offer 828 spots for all majors under a major selection system, the largest among major universities in the Seoul metropolitan area. To ensure the stable operation of this system, the university has established a new College of Future Convergence and assigned major counselors to provide customized academic and career guidance that reflects the aptitudes and characteristics of each student.

Another distinctive advantage is the expansion of major selection opportunities for current students. Kookmin University introduced the Omega School education system to ensure existing students' right to choose their majors. The Omega School education system is Kookmin University's unique specialized program that allows students to change their majors through participation in entrepreneurship programs, internships, and experiential programs. Together with the major selection system, it is recognized as a policy that supports all students' exploration of majors and career choices. Additionally, the university has significantly improved its transfer and major change system, which was previously limited to one instance during enrollment, by allowing students to apply twice per semester until the eighth semester of enrollment, thereby strengthening its academic operations and administrative and financial support systems for students.

The operation of interdisciplinary programs linking academic and extracurricular activities is also noteworthy. Kookmin University has made efforts to promote the balanced development of various majors by closely linking liberal arts subjects such as basic sciences, humanities, arts, and social sciences to ensure the stable establishment of basic science majors. Furthermore, the university has expanded its basic literacy education support programs to help students understand major-specific foundational courses, thereby strengthening their academic foundations. Additionally, the university was recognized for its excellence in expanding the breadth and depth of education through the “TEAM Education Certification System,” which promotes interdisciplinary courses and practical activities.

Kookmin University plans to strengthen internal opinion gathering and communication systems to ensure the sustainability of innovation, and to continue to provide practical measures such as scholarships, dormitory fees, and facility support for students admitted through the major self-selection system to support the stable establishment of the system.
