Crime rates are escalating in an atrocious and elaborate way especially in the 21st century. Media shows mass murder and serial murder cases rather than simple theft or revenge crimes. Nowadays, because many murder cases are shown, you might have heard about a lot of them, but it’s no more shocking news. It is hard to solve some crimes in a traditional way. To keep pace with these crimes, the way of Korean police criminal investigation has become more professional and scientific.
Korea Police scientific investigation (KPSI) has many professional investigators who investigate crime with scientific knowledge and technology. After NISI (National Institute of Scientific Investigation) was founded in 1955, and it started to deal with drug, poison, reading documents and criminal psychology. So, KPSI now handles fingerprint scanning, lie-detector, drawing montage, and reading CCTV. Fingerprint scanning system provides a suspect’s background check, and using a lie-detector helps rule out doubt. Investigators use a computer graphic montage, which is more objective than a hand-made montage. Reading CCTV, investigators can collect every detail about the criminal situation.
KPSI opens its Scientific Investigation Experience Center every 4th Wednesday from 1:30 to 4:30, in the Seodaemun police office. It takes about three minutes by walk from the Seodaemun station. Anyone over 18 years old can apply on the the KPSI internet homepage (http://www.kpsi.go.kr/). During odd months, it provides a special experience of NISI’s, consisting of how to conduct an autopsy and DNA test. In even months, you can learn how to draw a montage with a computer program, and how to scan fingerprints, and the basic principles of lie-detectors. It also offers experimental hypothesis investigation.
“After experiencing many programs here, I learned how the result, which varied with different methods of investigation, was often totally different than I had imagined. Before this experience, I thought police offices did not make enough effort to communicate, and I had a strange feeling about criminal investigation. However when police officers guide me, I feel more trusting and familiar with them,” said, Lee Hye Lim (Eulji University, senior), who visited this center twice.
In this way, the experience center will give you a chance to know how scientific investigation is conducted, although there is still a huge influx of information in the Mass Media, that is still unfamiliar. The National Scientific Investigation Team’s  fingerprint scanning technique is the world’s best. For example, when the Tsunami occurred in 2004, Korea found missing people most quickly. Despite this, many Koreans are skeptical about the  national investigation team’s ability. Whoever, comes to visit this school, will discover current national scientific investigation ability.
Global society is becoming more diverse and complicated, so criminal cases will also be more complicated. To solve such cases, professional intelligence is needed from specialists who can analyze any kind of criminal case in a professional and systematic way. KPSI, will be called upon in this situation for its scientific technology and advanced capabilities. How about Kookminians visiting this Experience Center? It will give you the special experience of being an investigator.
