Can we live well without electricity in a modern society? If electricity did not exist, people would not receive almost all the conveniences of our modern society. Because the electricity is used everywhere in our daily lives and it’s used for various ways and it is also more widely put into practical use than we thought. However, we do not know for sure about electricity which sinks in our lives.
Korea Electric Power Corporation(KEPCO) was built on August 10, 2001 under its mission to inform the public how precious electricity is, to preserve the development process of modern electricity and the history of Korean electricity by organizing the resources systematically. The Electricity Museum is established for the first time in Korea and it is composed of the hall of history of Electricity, modern electricity, and eco-friendly energy, so people can watch though the procedures of generating electricity and see the various aspects of electricity.
In the history section is a dynamical reenactment of the first Electric Lighting in Korea in front of Keoncheng Hall at the Kyongbok Palace in March, 1887. The original document about the Electric Trolleypass in 1910 and the 10-year History of Chosunjeoneop is also shown, along with the Lightning arrester-Generator, Dong dae-moon Power Plant, Korea’s first Commercial Power Station and electric trolley cars travelling on Jongro Street. It provides the opportunity for visitors to experience firsthand. For example, there is a touchscreen to search for information about electricity, Fleming’s tube and Faraday’s electromagnet principle. Park Ju Young(Inha University, Junior) said, "The Electricity Museum is very interesting. It’s full of good designs and various things to see and the hands-on part is very well-made." In Modern Electricity Hall, there are many kinds of models which show the Korean modern-type principals of generating electricity as nuclear power generation, solar energy generation, and wind power generation. Also, you can get experiential learning from the four-dimension virtual image section which exhibits virtual images which come from reflected lights that cannot be touched by hands. Moreover, the section called ‘Human Battery’, you can measure electric current which comes from your body. Also, it has a quiz room full of touch screens for testing your common knowledge of electricity. The section named ‘Do You Know These old Days?'’ allows you to see the news and advertisements in formal days.
An Myeong Jin, Director of the Electricity Musseum said "The KEPCO Electricity Museum was founded in order to preserve the history of Korea's electricity, and it has 70,000 people visit annually. We also operate a gallery and cultural classes so that we can help our local people enjoy the cultural life."
The Electricity Museum is located in 3rd floor of KEPCO Cultural Assembly Hall in Seocho-Dong, Seocho-Gu which is nearby the Yang Jae station. The opening hours are 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and it is closed on Mondays, New Year's Day and Chu-seok. In the neighborhood of the Electricity Museum, museums like National Traditional Music Museum, Hongsan Museum, Yunbonggil Memorial Museum and Bonsai Museum are located. How about going on a museum tour on the weekend with family and friends?
