Last Oct 11th (Thu) at 7:30 pm, the 40th Graduation Exhibition of the Fashion Design Department was held next to KMU’s main gate on the basketball court. The graduates finish their 4 years of university courses by holding a graduation fashion show. This year, the stage was created with designs showing their own emotions and individualities. All 36 graduates successfully completed the graduation fashion show with a blaze of spectators and reporters.

Before the fashion show

Students showed their professional manner from the preparation they started last summer vacation to the moment the show finished. The fashion show was a collaborative work between designers, 4th year students and the staff and helpers from 1st to 3rd year students. They divided and shared each part by teams and prepared all processes such as planning the show, directing, arranging the models, and creating and promotion. In the back of the brilliantly decorated stage, they bustled around until the show was finished. “The audience’s expectation about this graduation fashion show was much higher. I came here to cheer my sister who is a designer for this exhibition. My expectation about this show was big because KMU is famous for fashion design, Shin Sun Mi (assistant curator of Shin Art Gallery) said. “As a student who has the same major, Fashion Design, I felt curious about what kinds of works KMU Fashion Design students would show for this exhibition, Lim Kwang Jun (Fashion Design Major at Sejong University) said in showing his satisfaction. “I could directly feel KMU Fashion Design’s stature and prominence.”

The scene of the fashion show

“This fashion show exhibited various designs successfully using the title 'Fashion Channel-K', like a lot of TV channels instead of just one standardized concept. We tried to express each stage very uniquely through an analogue stage backdrop decorated with TV channel motifs and lots of stage pictures,” said Lim Ha Rim (Fashion Design Major ‘08) and student representative for this exhibition.

Each stage of this fashion show consisted of a total of 12 stages, depicting diversity. The modern costumes had a military look on stage 2, overpowering the show and drawing acclamation. Also materials with a unique texture not normally used in traditional fabrics, appeared often; particularly stage 4’s design used bandage like materials which directed a modern and simple feeling to attract the audience. The design of stage 8, which showed both theatrical costume creativity and everyday wear practicability, were very impressive and conveyed intensity by using sharp colors with unique patterns and neon colors. Finally, a glamorous dress combining the baroque style and fashion decorated the show’s finale. The dress, which was reminiscent of flowers, created a feminine and luxurious feeling, and brought down the house. This fashion show freed the audience from burdens and created a comfortable atmosphere with upbeat music that all people could enjoy.

Receiving congratulations and after stage greeting

The fashion show transpired with an impressive opening and a professional finale. The graduates who participated in all processes nervously finished their stage greetings and shared their contentment with their family and friends by hugging one another and receiving flowers.
“It was tough preparing for this exhibition but working with classmates was fun and memorable. I am proud of myself and so happy,” Park Dal Hee (Fashion Design Major ‘09) stated. “Through this graduation exhibition, students showed their latent sensibility, beauty and all the skills they learnt from school. Our student’s sense and design skills are very outstanding. I hope they grow as talented people leading Korea and the world’s fashion,” Professor Lee Jae Jung said, lavishing words of encouragement on the graduates.

CLOTHES SAY A LOT ABOUT A PERSON

Clothes tell about the individual person. I think the dynamics and variety in this graduation fashion exhibition showed who these students are. All sorts of emotions they felt for 4 years while they were spending time with design and KMU were reflected on stage. I applaud their talents and efforts. Now, the graduate’s stage at KMU is over. However, they will now go out into the design society and make new histories of KMU.
