“Awaken From the Illusion” Cause “Equity Aids the Vigilant, Not Those Who Sleep on Their Rights”

Do any lectures stand out from your university study? If there are, how many lectures are there and what makes them remain in your memory? It was not until I became a senior that I searched my memory. What did I find in many lectures? Knowledge? Good grades? Great illumination? I don’t know... It is relative. But in the cold light of reason, a great number of lectures slipped from my mind after exams. However what remains in my memory is when I repeatedly exchanged questions and answers with a professor. Unfortunately, this kind of experience was rare. Why?
Maybe, you have seen the film 좬The Paper Chase좭. This movie shows the class atmosphere in a law school. In the movie, the professor gives incessant questions and the students are confused by them. However the students naturally improve their logical thinking and autonomous judgment through this questioning process.
The so-called Socratic Method teaches a way to expand the thinking faculties, improve originality and develop quick thinking. This is the style of lecturing that is lacking for Corean students. As we know, Corea is a country that stubbornly adheres to a cramming style of education. Corean institutons have stuck to old customs which deprive the students of the opportunity of thinking. Therefore, students supplement this lack of development of their thinking faculties in secondary education with private education. As a result, the relationship between public education and private education is reversed in secondary education (That is to put the cart before the horse). On the other hand, it is suggested that the quality of university education is worse than the amount of paid tuition. When I think of it, an underlying cause is not only the education policies but also the manner of lecturing. We have accused the education policies in general, of being the problem but I think the manner of lecturing is an even larger problem.
Till when do you think a desk theory. If you are aware that something is wrong, should you not correct it? “Equity aids the vigilant, not those who sleep on their rights” This means that if someone doesn’t claim their rights, they cannot be preserved. Nobody will help the person who doesn’t insist upon their own rights. If the university doesn’t reduce our tuition, we should demand a higher quality of class. This is our right. This 43th Seminar of The Lecture Method was about the Socratic Method. With this opportunity instructors should throw away the old style and give us good lessons. Meanwhile students should claim our rights. It’s time for active change to become more intelligent selves for our future. As a law student and as a person who has an interest in pedagogy but also furthermore as a student of Corea, I yell “Insist upon your rights”.
