Two students from Kookmin University have been admitted as the finalists for the ‘Global Doctoral Fellowship’ which has been acknowledged as the global doctoral program that fosters supporting business that will lead national competitiveness.
A graduate student enrolled in the Fusion-design program at Techno-design Graduate School, Kim Ja In has been admitted with “Research for Design General Education Plan for Expansion in Design Literacy” and Han SeongGu, a graduate student studying in the chemistry program at the General Graduate School, was admitted with the topic of “Investigation in Peptide Ligand, Endotherin-1 Binding Site on GPCR Human Type A Endotherin Receptor and Investigation in Difference of Gαq and GαiBinding Sites” to the ‘Global Doctoral Fellowship’.
Kim Ja In’s “Research for Design General Education Plan for Expansion in Design Literacy” placed emphasis on the importance of general education through research in the general concept of design literacy and its scope. In addition, it suggested a new paradigm with the main objective of developing an alternative policy that can be practically applied in Korea.
In addition, Han SeongGu’s “Investigation in Peptide Ligand, Endotherin-1 Binding Site on GPCR Human Type A Endotherin Receptor and Investigation in Difference of Gαq and GαiBinding Sites” has its objectives on investigating the binding characteristics of GPCR for peptide ligands and the difference in recognition of other classes of Gα proteins for GPCR. Such research was based on the confirmation of success in the overexpression of Human Type AEndotherin Receptor, which is a type of GPCR having peptides as its ligands in E. Coli, at an advanced research inthe laboratory affiliated as well as confirmation of activation of purified receptor in human lipid bilayer environment. A mutant was prepared and through analysis of binding characteristics of proteins including, ligands, Gαq, and Gαi via SPR and ELISA methods and also through structural analysis of protein via single crystallization, such research could realize its objective.
Furthermore, his research made predictions on its contribution to the general scientific perspective in the understanding of GPCR communication methods as well as in the development of medicine targeting GPCR.
The ‘Global Doctoral Fellowship” which is governed by the Ministry of Education and the National Research Foundation of Korea, is the core training program in Korea that supports Korean elites that are attending graduate programs in domestic graduate schools to help them in their education and research. There are great expectations for their development into top-notch intellectuals that may contribute in the future wealth of the nation. Moreover, such training program supports graduate students for their potential growth as a Nobel Prize winner. For those who are selected, a total of 60 million won is given at 2.5 million won/month as a grant to help them focus on their studies and research projects.
