The Department of Advanced Materials Engineering pushes forward joint research with MIT PV lab in America.

The study assignment (Manipulation of Dislocations in Multicrystalline Silicon) of the research team of Advanced Materials Engineering (Professor& Senior Researcher Hyun Joo Choi, Professor & Joint Researcher Hee Man Choe ) was selected as a science and technology cooperation expansion business with America in 2012 from the National research foundation of Korea. The term of research is from Dec. 1st 2012 to Nov. 30th 2015, for a total 3 years, and it has been processing through joint research with MIT of America. The total cost of research is 180,000,000 won for 3 years from our school, and $3,472,500 from MIT.
“The science and technology expansion business with America” is a business having a goal of intense science and technology cooperation by building a network and carrying forward joint research between Korea and America. Specifically, we will try to solve the global problems of the future through environmental research in areas such as global warming, the environment, energy, anomaly climate, population etc. by collaborative research using the information of the personal and material force of the America. We are also looking for expansion with nations which have a wealth of resources.
The research team of Professor Hyun Joo Choi from our school has been developing a technology with MIT PV lab to maximize the efficiency of silicon solar cells through an additional process of low price by controlling dislocations, which is fatal structure flaw in lowering the efficiency of multicrystalline silicon used in solar cells.
1) While most domestic research is focused primarily on one element, this research can overcome the limitations of previous application development technology as by attempting source technology development of solar cell materials.
2) Though the exchange student program of MIT, the plan is to exchange researchers so students can experience an advanced research culture and improve their international sense.
3) MIT PV Lab of America built infrastructure connecting an analytical technique based on synchrotron, which is the best in the world. They have professional analytical techniques which our country hasn’t excelled at, so we are expecting excellent research results though this joint research.
4) Through joint research of materials and elements from the Dept. of Advanced Materials Engineering (Kookmin University) and the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering at MIT, we are expecting great results in unexplored fields.
The research assignment (Manipulation of Dislocations in Multicrystalline Silicon) being processed will utilize the solar cells of multicrystalline silicon. Though this research, if we improve efficiency over 30% by reducing the dislocation velocity of a solar cell, we can expect the results of a market creation of over 1 trillion won, and a reduction of about 180% in the unit production price.
