Co-research team which consisted of Professor Sun-kook Kim from Kung Hee University and Woong Choi from our school was selected as the cover article of a famous journal in the field of new materials in Germany.

The thesis titled “High Detectives Multilayer MoS2 Phototransistors with Spectral Response from Ultraviolet to Infrared” suggested application possibilities in various fields such as touch screen panels which can bend, solar cells and image sensors for digital cameras, as investigating characteristics of high-detective multilayer MoS2 phototransistors.

MoS2 which is a semiconductor substance having a two dimensional crystal structure similar to grapheme, is excellent for transistor applications but is a difficult product to work with because of its complexity. To overcome this process they lowered the power consumption the transistor creates using simple multi-layer molybdenum and then they published the electronic characteristics to the worldwide scientific journal ‘Nature’ by Nature Communications.

Their study found photoelectric characteristics to extend the application’s range of multilayer Mos2 transistors, which furthered the thesis and was published in August. They concluded that previous MoS2 reacted by only a green light; but on the contrary, this multilayer one reacted by a wide range lights from infrared light including visible ray to UV light because of a small gap or multilayer in the MoS2.

As a result, the multilayer MoS2 has excellent possibilities regarding reaction and reception compared to griffin or single layer MoS2. You can get a glimpse of the future with it. It has many possibilities including applications for silicon photoelectronic devices.

In this thesis, researchers who from Kookmin University, Kyung Hee University, Korea University, and Notre Dame University in United States participated. The first author is Professor Woong Choi of the Materials Science and Engineering Department at our school, and the senior author is Professor Sunkook Kim of the Electronics of Radio Science and Engineering Department at Kyung Hee University.

Advanced Materials, published by Germany’s Wiley-VCH, is a weekly journal that is one of the best in the field for publishing thesis on new materials and it has published great achievements through its rigorous screening process.
