Kookmin University held the "International Workshop on Smart Embedded System (IWSES)"with the University of California, Irvine on June 14, 2012 at the UCI’s Donald Bren Hall.

IWSES was co-hosted by Kookmin University’s Telematics and Open Source Research Centers, UCI, and the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology. Google, Samsung Electronics, and SK Planet participated in the workshop and held presentations and discussions on smart phones, smart cars, and smart robots.

Thisevent was initiated by Dr. Jeong, Gu Min’s lecture on Android smart phone programming at UCI since last springsemester. (Dr. Jeong is a Professor of Electrical Engineering at Kookmin University) At “A Mobile Application Showcase Event (AMASE)", which was held as a side event of IWSES, results of Professor Jeong’s Android programming classes, such as "Cloud Robotics Integration App", "Model Car App", "Augmented Reality App","Wi-Fi-based File-sharing Apps”,“Sensor-Network Fusion App", were displayed and demonstrated.

“I focused on delivering Korea’s smart phone software technologies to the students during lectures since Android Application lecture itself is still very uncommon in universities in the US. Through the lectures and academic exchanges with fellow professors, I was able to realize the status of Korea as the IT powerhouse and the high educational level of Kookmin University’s School of Electrical Engineering”, Professor Jeong mentioned.

Although smart devices using Google's Android operating system are already flooding the market, UCI could not open lectures related to the subject despite the high demand due to lack of curriculum, textbooks, and faculty members. However, as Dr. Jeong agreed to hold smart phone related lectures at UCI last spring, students at UCI are now able to take the smart phone lectures. Before leaving to UCI, Professor Jeong was actively participating in research and teaching at Kookmin University, SKT’s T Academy, and Hyundai MN Soft.
