The Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation at Kookmin University (KMU) was selected as the “Excellent Intellectual Property Management Institution” by the Korean Intellectual Property Office at the Public Technology Transfer Commercialization Roadshow held at the Commons, Yonsei University on Tuesday, Sep.12.

The “Excellent Intellectual Property Management Institution” is a selective and exclusive commendation given to a university or research institution that is highly accomplished in creating and applying intellectual property rights. KMU had the honor of being selected along with Kwangwoon University, Chungnam National University, Soonchunhyang University, Korea Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), and Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science. These selected excellent institutions will receive intellectual property points as a prize, receiving up to 40% aid of the official fee for patenting a duty invention of its affiliated researchers. The required criteria to be examined and selected as the “Excellent Intellectual Property Management Institution” are difficult to achieve.

According to the Korean Intellectual Property Office and the Korean Invention Promotion Association, there are ten different categories used to specify and calculate an organization's points for their selection. Firstly, an organization should have a dedicated department and specific workforce for Intellectual Property. Next, it is required for an organization to be selected as an “Excellent Job Invention Compensation Institution” or if it has worked to fulfill the standards of the Job Invention System. Thirdly, an organization is given standardized points by calculating the number of employees and the total number of Industrial Property Right applications. Fourth, an organization is given points in exchange for the number of Industrial Property Rights it owns. The fifth criterion is the ratio of the number of holding education sessions in relation to Intellectual Property Rights and the number of its employees participating in the sessions. The sixth criterion is that an organization is given points in accordance with the number of the workforce in research and development of any kind. The seventh standard for an organization is that it is evaluated for understanding the market's trend of Intellectual Property Rights through prior art research and patent mapping. The eighth criterion is that an organization is given scores after being calculated by the amount of patents it owns, the profit of unity model-applied products or services, and the total sales. The ninth criterion is that an organization is given a score based on how often it uses exclusive license rights to maintain and introduce new Intellectual Property Rights. Lastly, an organization is given scores based on whether it is infringing on the Intellectual Property of other firms, as well as whether it is inspecting if other organizations are infringing on their own Intellectual Property.

In the past, KMU had been selected by the Korean Intellectual Property Office as an excellent institution for IP-R&D, intellectual property rights, and research and development, as well as an excellent institution for public technology transfer. It was a result of new attempts and strategies to improve the quality of intellectual property management by internalizing and executing the in-depth consulting outcome of the intellectual property management of the Korea Intellectual Property STrategy Agency (KISTA). Furthermore, Kookmin University Technology Holdings' support for the laboratory start-up done by the relocation of redescription and the management of the Private Investment-led Technology Startup Support (TIPS) is a distinguished strength of KMU.

President Jeong Seung-Ryul said, “Through this chance, I would like to express appreciation to the Korea Intellectual Property Institution for the support to strengthen KMU's competence for intellectual property management. This appointment will serve as a momentum for KMU to maximize the virtuous circle of space technology discovery, commercialization, revenue security, and reinvestment to become South Korea's The Best University of Entrepreneurship.”
