The School of Computer Science in the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science of Kookmin University was selected to the 2014 support project for software specialized university by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, and ‘the proclamation ceremony for software specialized university’ that proclaimed new educational contents was held at 3p.m. on September 19th on the Academic Conference Hall located on the 1st floor of the Administration Building. The event began with the opening address of Professor Seong-su Im in the School of Computer Science, who was the executive director of the project as well as the host of the event in the presence of President Ji-soo Yu of Kookmin University, Director General Seok-jin Seo of the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, President Jong-gwon Kim of the Korean Institute of Information Scientists and Engineers, and President Su-yong Park of the National IT Industry Promotion Agency, Dean Min-seok Yi of NHN NEXT, Executive Director Jeong-han Kim of Samsung Electronics, President Jong-yeong Yun of Silicon Valley K Group, CEOs of various software companies, and guests.

The School of Computer Science in the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science that was selected as the project of software specialized university will receive 700 million won a year for 6 years to improve the educational facilities and educational course. In addition, 30 students will be selected every year to support scholarship for 4 semesters and provide internship opportunities in and out of the country in cooperation with the Department of Computer Science in UC Irvine for summer exchange program and project.
In the welcoming address, President Yu promised to establish an exemplary model of software educational programs equipped with global competitiveness. In recognition that software took the pivotal roles in all industries, he pledged to exert utmost efforts to realize true development in the domestic software industry while executing the project for the coming 6 years by setting software education as essential elective of all majors.
Director General Seok-jin Seo of the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, President Jong-gwon Kim of the Korean Institute of Information Scientists and Engineers, and President Su-yong Park of the National IT Industry Promotion Agency graced the occasion with their presence through congratulatory address and words of encouragement.
Through this event, the School of Computer Science suggested new curriculum as a software specialized university and prior to learning the syntax of the programming language, the freshmen are encouraged to study the curriculum to better understand the new software concepts. Also, it intends to help students acquire knowledge on practical technologies that can be immediately applied in the real setting after graduation by using open software for the entire curriculum.
The faculty and members of the School of Computer Science that will continue promoting the project of software specialized university asked for consistent interest and support on their efforts and Kookmin University promised to make precious contribution for the formation of true software-oriented society. The guests and students who participated in the event expressed great expectation to the developmental and passionate change of the School of Computer Science.
