Kookmin University (President Jeong Seung Ryul) held the ‘Ministry of Education Glocal Lab Defense Technology Protection Research Institute Opening Ceremony’ on Friday, October 24, at the Academic Conference Hall in the Main Administration Building. This institute, part of the Ministry of Education's Glocal Lab initiative, will conduct research totaling 21.6 billion won over the next nine years. Kookmin University's Defense Cyber and Electronic Warfare Research Institute (Director Han Dong Guk) serves as the lead institution, with Korea University Sejong Campus and Kangwon National University participating as consortium universities.

This institute will serve as a national research hub for securing and protecting advanced defense industry technologies. Its objectives include developing cutting-edge security technologies that integrate cyber security and defense technology, AI-based threat detection, next-generation cryptography research, and cultivating specialized talent. The opening ceremony was graced by approximately 200 attendees, including key figures from industry, academia, research institutes, and the military, such as Jeong Jae Yeon, President of Kangwon National University; Yang Ji Woon, Vice President of Korea University Sejong Campus; Lee Seung Won, Vice Mayor for Economy of Sejong Special Self-Governing City; Oh Hu Jeong, Director of the Signal Technology Research Institute at the 777th Command; and Lee Seung Young, Head of LIG Nex1.

In his welcome address, Jeong Seung Ryul, President of Kookmin University, stated, “The opening of the Defense Technology Protection Research Institute symbolizes a starting point demonstrating that protecting technology is synonymous with protecting the nation.” He added, “Kookmin University, as a hub for industry-academia-research collaboration in defense security, will further solidify the intellectual foundation of national security.” Following this, Research Institute Director Han Dong Guk remarked, “Through this institute, we will establish an integrated defense security system spanning both cyber and physical domains. We will dedicate ourselves to continuous research and talent development to ensure the safe protection of national core technologies.”

The ‘Glocal Lab Defense Technology Protection Research Institute’ is part of the Ministry of Education's initiative to foster university research hubs. It aims to achieve △ innovative research outcomes △ talent cultivation △ and the establishment of an open research ecosystem.

Kookmin University, in particular, is recognized as a university with practical research capabilities in the defense field, centered around its Defense Cyber and Electronic Warfare Research Institute. With the opening of this new institute, it is expected to establish itself as a leading research hub in the fields of defense security and technology protection.
