Like water or air, the word ubiquitous describes ¡®something that is
everywhere¡¯. It comes from a Latin word that represents an environment with an
intellectual network system, and you don¡¯t need a terminal. The fourth art
festival at our university is called ¡®Connection¡¯and started on October 11th. It
is going to develop ways to make contact with the ubiquitous in the art field.
The art students will attempt to show the pure and special features of the
different forms of art and how they interlink with each other. The 21st century
is not a world where only one value rules the whole world; it is a world of
making new values through reciprocal relationships. Unlike other schools Kookmin
University has music, art and performance all under one roof and we are more
able to combine these creative forms of expression. This art festival,
¡®Connection¡¯ can be viewed as a new attempt to be ubiquitous but it could also
represent an approach to bridge the different parts of society. In 2003, the Art
Department¡¯s third art festival was called ¡®Contact¡¯ and they aimed to spread
across the different genres between music, art and performance. In that festival
and now two years later they are trying to make a connection between one art and
another art, art and the public, art and society.

| ¡®Link Project ¥±¡¯ is a
function that represents ¡®Connection.¡¯ This event is scheduled to be held from
October 11th to October 25th at the Kookmin art gallery. This project matches
with the theme of the art festival really well and is divided into various
areas. First, ¡®meet construction and painting¡¯ is a way to connect abstract
painting and the construction process. The second project ¡®Analysis of force and
union¡¯ is created by chosen five graduate artists and undergraduates.
Furthermore there is a pantomime by the Korean National University of Arts
acting school professor titled, ¡®Secret People¡¯ with undergraduate students and
a ¡®36.5 celsius sculptured group¡¯ in the sculpture area. Lastly, there is an
event called ¡®Contract-ullim.¡¯ The audience was greatly mored by the
way in which music was linked to perporming art, and people were loud in praise.
One of the students, now sophomore in English literature said, ¡°I knew that
there were lots of Kookmin University students participating but I didn¡¯t expect
this. Furthermore, ¡®Chunhyang¡¯ was better than expected. Ballet is originated in
the West, but in ¡®Chunhyang¡¯, the story and formation were marvelous and even
the stage was made especially for this Korean adaptation. It was much more
interesting than any other work of art." Finally, there are various
events involving vocal music, movies, piano performances, orchestral music,
musical compositions, dance and theater, a graduate school¡¯s preview and even a
performance by an instructor. In particular, the Czech Republic¡¯s Farma v
Jeskyni and company Yeohaengja perform ¡®The Song of an Emigrant¡¯ together. These
events are all free, so we could enjoy them without worries. The Art College
dean, Shin Jang-sik said, ¡°events for students to spread and communicate aren¡¯t
usually free, however, I believe this festival is a chance to connect students
with professors, with parents of students and people who love art. I expect that
from this festival people can believe that art is everywhere and easily
available .¡± We have to participate in it as active agents, realizing ¡®contact¡¯
to make a ¡®connection¡¯. ¡®Connection¡¯ with art requires our participation.
